A Himalayan salt lamp is a block of pink rock salt, hollowed to hold a small bulb, so that the light glows through the crystal in warm amber and orange tones. The salt is mined in the Khewra region of Punjab, Pakistan, from deposits laid down by an ancient sea around 250 million years ago. Every lamp is hand carved, so no two share the same shape or shade.

Each lamp comes with a bulb and a wooden base. Keep it away from bathrooms and windowsills: salt attracts moisture and a lamp left off in a damp room will sweat until it is switched on again.
The pink colour comes from traces of iron and other minerals in the halite. Salt is hygroscopic, which explains the sweating, and the warm bulb keeps the surface dry. The claims about air purification remain unproven; the glow and the mineral are real.
