What is a levitating lamp?
A levitating lamp is a light, a bulb, a moon, a planet or a cloud, that floats a few centimetres above its base with nothing holding it. An electromagnet in the base balances a magnet inside the object, and sensors adjust the field hundreds of times a second to keep it steady. Power for the LED crosses the gap by induction, so there are no wires. Push it gently and it spins.

The science in two lines
A permanent magnet cannot float stably on its own (Earnshaw's theorem), so the base uses an electromagnet with a Hall sensor feedback loop: if the object drops, the field strengthens; if it rises, the field eases. The correction is invisible and continuous.
A coil in the base and a coil in the object form a loose transformer, which is how the LED lights with no cable.

How does a levitating lamp work?

Is it hard to make it float?
It takes a few tries the first time. Hold the object above the base, lower it slowly until you feel the push, and let go. The manual shows the exact position; after that it is a ten second job.
What happens if the power goes off?
The object drops onto the base gently. Lift it back into position when the power returns.
Is it safe near electronics and pets?
The magnetic field only matters within a few centimetres of the base. Keep bank cards and mechanical watches off the base. Pets and children are fine.
Do the levitating lamps make noise?
No. The base is silent. Some models hum very faintly if you put your ear to them, nothing you would notice in a room.
