What is a 3D wooden puzzle?

A 3D wooden puzzle is a model kit cut by laser from thin plywood sheets: you press the numbered pieces out of the boards and slot them together, usually without glue, to build a vehicle, a landmark, an animal or a working mechanism. Piece counts run from 20 for a small animal to over 400 for an animated space shuttle. The result is both the pleasure of the build and an object to display.

Who is this collection for?

🪵

For a teenager or an adult who likes a slow build

From 10 to 14 upwards depending on the model. A wooden 3D puzzle is an evening or a weekend of quiet, precise work with a display piece at the end.

🎁

For a gift for someone who has everything

Parents, partners and colleagues looking for a present that becomes a hobby for a few hours and a shelf object for years.

🎻

For model lovers and history buffs

A Big Ben, a biplane or a music box violin is craftsmanship you assemble yourself, with no glue and no paint required.

How to choose a 3D puzzle

Piece count is the honest measure of difficulty. Under 100 pieces is an evening; 150 to 250 is a weekend; 400 and up is a project. The theme decides who it is for.

No glue or tools are needed for most models; a few suggest a drop of glue on stress points. Spare parts are available for Robotime and ROKR kits through our customer service.

The science in two lines

The pieces are cut with a laser accurate to a tenth of a millimetre, which is why they hold by friction alone. Gears in the mechanical models are cut from the same sheets: the tooth profiles mesh well enough to run a marble lift or a music box movement.

No. The laser cut pieces are designed to slot and press together. A few models suggest a drop of glue on stress points for extra strength, but it is optional.
From two hours for a small animal set to six or more for a space shuttle or a music box. Each product page lists the piece count and an estimated build time.
The animal set works from 3 with help. Most vehicle and building models are 8 and up. The mechanical models with gears, lights or music boxes are 14 and up.
Yes, for the Robotime and ROKR models. Contact our customer service with the model name and the piece number from the manual.
The illuminated Big Ben for a London lover, the VW camper van for a road trip fan, the violin music box for a musician, the space shuttle for anyone who watches launches.
