What is a Rubik's cube?
A Rubik's cube is a 3x3x3 puzzle of 26 small cubes on a central core, invented by Ernő Rubik in Budapest in 1974. Each face turns independently, scrambling the six colours; the goal is to return every face to a single colour. It has 43 quintillion possible positions and can always be solved in 20 moves or fewer. Modern speed cubes turn faster, corner-cut and often use magnets to align each turn.

Which Rubik's cube is best for a beginner?
A standard stickerless 3x3 with a smooth mechanism. It is the one every tutorial is written for. Move on to a 2x2 for speed or a 4x4 for a harder challenge once the 3x3 is solved.
Are these official Rubik's brand cubes?
They are speed cubes in the same 3x3 format, made by specialist cube manufacturers. Each product page names the model. Many solvers prefer them to the original for the smoother turning.
What age can a child start cubing?
Around 7 or 8 for a 3x3 with a beginner method, earlier for a 2x2. The mirror cube and the megaminx suit 10 and up.
Do I need to learn algorithms?
For the 3x3, a handful of short sequences is enough to solve it every time. Our blog has a beginner guide; each cube also works fine as a pure fidget if solving is not the point.
What is a magnetic cube?
A cube with small magnets in the pieces that snap each turn into alignment. It turns faster and more precisely, which is why speedcubers use them. Not needed for a first cube.
