What are the tiny openings on leaves that allow gas exchange called?
Answer: Stomata. Stomata are tiny openings found mainly on the underside of leaves. They allow CO2 and O2 to be exchanged with the atmosphere and regulate transpiration. A single leaf can contain thousands of them.
Why do leaves change colour in autumn?
Answer: Because chlorophyll breaks down and reveals other pigments. In autumn, less light and falling temperatures cause chlorophyll (the green pigment) production to stop. The other pigments already present, such as carotenoids (yellow-orange) and anthocyanins (red), then become visible.
