Walnut Ferrofluid Lamp: the liquid that dances to sound
A ferrofluid lamp that reacts to music
Ferrofluid is a liquid loaded with magnetic nanoparticles, invented at NASA in the 1960s. Exposed to a magnetic field, it forms spectacular spikes. In this ferrofluid lamp, a microphone picks up the sounds in the room and drives an electromagnet: the louder the sound, the more the fluid moves. With rhythmic music, the effect becomes hypnotic. The soft light behind the 5 cm window shows off every movement.
A handmade solid walnut case
The case of this magnetic fluid lamp is cut from 6 mm thick solid walnut. The grain varies from one lamp to the next, sometimes with rare patterns, and slight traces of hand assembly may be visible. Compact (8 x 9 x 8 cm), it fits beside a computer, a turntable or a speaker. A truly original gift for a music lover, a geek or anyone who appreciates beautiful tech objects.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the ferrofluid lamp work?
Ferrofluid is a liquid loaded with magnetic nanoparticles, and in a magnetic field it forms spikes. A microphone picks up sound in the room and drives an electromagnet, so the louder the sound, the more the fluid moves.
Is it a speaker?
No. It reacts to sound but does not produce any, so place it next to a speaker or a source of music to see the fluid move to the beat.
What is the case like and how big is it?
The case is made of solid walnut with 6 mm panels, assembled by hand, and the grain varies from lamp to lamp. It measures 8 cm wide, 9 cm high and 8 cm deep, with a 5 cm viewing window.
Does it have lighting, and what age is it for?
Yes, built-in mood lighting shines behind the window to show every movement of the fluid. The recommended age is 14 and over.
