What is a world globe?
A world globe is a spherical map of the Earth, the only map with no distortion of shape, area or distance. Ours range from classic desk globes with current political maps to illuminated globes that double as night lights, constellation globes that show the sky instead of the land, and levitating globes that float and spin above their base. Most are 14 to 30 cm across.
Who is this collection for?
🌍
For a child who asks where places are
From 6 upwards. A globe on the desk answers the question with a spin, and an illuminated one makes it the best night light in the house.
🎁
For a graduation, a retirement or a new office
A levitating or a constellation globe is the classic executive gift, done with a scientific twist.
✈️
For travellers and dreamers
Anyone planning the next trip or remembering the last one. A globe is a map you can hold.
How to choose a globe
Decide on the use first: a study globe to look things up, a night light for a child, a decorative piece for a shelf, or a levitating globe as a conversation starter.
| Type | Best for | Size | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic and antique style globes | Studies, desks, geography | 14 to 25 cm | £30 to £50 |
| Illuminated globes | Kids' rooms, night light | 15 to 25 cm | £40 to £60 |
| Constellation and moon globes | Astronomy fans, bedrooms | 14 to 20 cm | £45 to £80 |
| Levitating globes | Offices, gifts, statement pieces | 10 to 15 cm | £60 to £81 |
Maps are current political maps in English. The lit globes are USB powered; the levitating ones run from a mains adapter, included.
The science in two lines
Every flat map must stretch or shrink somewhere, because a sphere cannot be unrolled; the Mercator map that most of us grew up with makes Greenland look the size of Africa. A globe is the only honest representation, which is why navigators and schools kept using them long after flat maps were cheaper.
