What is a lava lamp?
A lava lamp is a glass vessel filled with a clear liquid and a coloured wax, sitting on a base that holds a small bulb. The bulb warms the wax until it becomes less dense than the liquid, so it rises in slow blobs, cools at the top, and sinks again. The cycle never repeats exactly. It was invented in Britain by Edward Craven Walker in 1963 and sold as the Astro lamp.

How to choose a lava lamp
Three things matter: the height (which sets the mood in a room), the colour combination of wax and liquid, and whether you want a classic shape or a novelty one. Our range covers all of them.
| Type | Best for | Height | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic colour lava lamp | A first lamp, bedside or desk | 35 to 40 cm | £44 to £70 |
| Retro 70s and colour changing | Living rooms, nostalgia gifts | 36 to 40 cm | £61 to £70 |
| Jellyfish and novelty lamps | Kids' rooms, gaming setups | 30 to 40 cm | £50 to £90 |
| Large and statement lamps | Lounges, bars, feature corners | 50 cm and over | £90 to £207 |
A taller lamp holds more wax and gives longer, lazier blobs. All our lamps are mains powered and take a standard replacement bulb, listed on each product page.
The science in two lines
Wax and liquid have almost the same density. Heat from the bulb expands the wax a little more than the liquid, so it floats; at the top it cools, contracts, and sinks. That tiny density difference is the whole show.
It takes 45 minutes to two hours to warm up the first time, which is why patience matters more than the bulb.
