Rachel Whitmore –
Bought this for my 9 year old after he got fascinated by static electricity at school. He put his hand on the glass and the purple streaks gathered right under his fingers, and he just stood there with his mouth open for a good minute. Then came a barrage of questions about why it works, so I’ve had to do some quick reading. It now lives on his bedroom shelf and gets switched on every evening.
Arthur Pemberton –
Got this for my granddaughter’s birthday. Her face lit up as much as the ball did. Lovely thing.

Always wondered how these worked so finally bought one. There’s a high-frequency current feeding the electrode in the centre, which excites the gas inside, and when you touch the glass your hand gives the current an easier path so the filaments are pulled towards it. Seeing it in action is far better than reading about it. Spot on for a desk ornament, and a brilliant conversation starter when colleagues drop by.
Gareth Lloyd –
The ball itself is good and does what it should, but the box arrived with a crushed corner and the plug adaptor was a bit loose in the socket at first. Took a few attempts to get it sitting properly. Works fine now, just a shame about the packaging for a gift.
Susan Garrett –
Back again after buying the magnetism kit last year, and this one didn’t let me down. Looks cracking in a dark room and the kids keep fighting over whose turn it is to touch it. Only reason for four stars is that it’s slightly smaller than I’d pictured, though 5 inches was clearly stated so that’s my fault really.
Declan O’Brien –
Does the job. Chuffed with it.
Margaret Hollis –
bought this for my grandson’s 8th birthday and he hasn’t stopped playing with it since. He kept putting his hand on the glass and shrieking with delight when the lightning followed his fingers, then dragged his mum in to have a go too. Arrived well wrapped, and the postie even got a demonstration. Spot on.
Daniel Pritchard –
Brilliant. The coloured streams of light dance about inside the globe and gather towards wherever your fingertips touch the glass, which is a cracking way to see electricity at work.
